Why Are My Graphics Card Fans Not Spinning? Reasons

Last Update: May 13, 2022 By Patrick Johnson Leave a Comment

If you’re experiencing issues with your graphics card, one of the first things you should do is check to see if the fans are spinning. If they’re not, there may be a problem with your graphics card or your computer’s cooling system.

As many gamers are familiar with the issue of graphics card fans not spinning. This can be a frustrating problem, as it can lead to overheating and damage to your hardware.

There are a few reasons why your graphics card fans might not be spinning. We’ll go over some of the most common causes below.

In this blog post, we’ll explain what causes this issue and how you can troubleshoot it. We’ll also provide some tips on how to keep your graphics card running cooler and prevent damage. Let’s get started!

Why Are My Graphics Card Fans Not Spinning

To get around this headache, it’s important to understand what causes graphics card fans to stop spinning in the first place. There are a few potential causes:

1. BIOS Settings

In some cases, your BIOS settings may be causing your graphics card fans not to spin. If you’re not sure how to access your BIOS, check your motherboard’s manual or look for a tutorial online.

2. Graphic Card Firmware

Outdated or corrupted firmware can also cause your graphics card fans to stop spinning. To check if this is the case, you can download and install the latest drivers and firmware for your graphics card.

3. Fan Malfunction

Fan malfunction is the third possibility but that is less likely if the card is new. The best way to test if your fan is working properly is to download CPUID HWMonitor. It’s a free program that monitors your computer’s hardware, including temperatures. If you don’t see any readings for fan speed in HWMonitor, then your fan isn’t spinning.

Another thing you can do is physically check the fan to see if it’s spinning. This can be done by opening up your case and taking a look. If you don’t feel confident doing this yourself, you can always take it to a computer repair shop. They should be able to tell you if the fan is spinning or not.

They will probably inspect your graphics card fans and other components while they’re in there.

4. Bent or Blocked Fan Blades

Sometimes, the fan blades can become bent from all the heat and vibration. This can cause them to rub against the side of the fan shroud, which will prevent the fan from spinning properly. The fix for this is to simply straighten out the fan blades with your fingers.

Another possibility is that something has become lodged in between the fan blades, preventing them from spinning freely.

This could be dust, dirt, hair, or anything else that might have found its way into your computer case. To fix this, you’ll need to open up your case and remove the obstruction. Be careful not to damage the fan while you’re doing this.

5. Failing Graphics Card

If your graphics card is failing, it’s possible that the fans will not spin. This is because the graphics card is not getting enough power and it’s struggling to function.

If you think this might be the case, you can try plugging your graphics card into a different power outlet, moreover, changing the Power supply can also deem beneficial.

You can also try removing your graphics card and then reinstalling it. This might help if there’s a connection issue.

6. Malfunction In Graphics Card Temperature Detection System

Some of the newer models of graphics cards are designed to allow their fans to not spin even if they are under considerable load as a means to reduce noise.

However, the trade-off is that these cards are more likely to overheat and become damaged as a result.

This temperature detection can be disabled by heading over  to the settings for your graphics card and changing the fan control from “automatic” to “manual.”

Doing this will cause the fans to spin at a constant speed, regardless of the load on your graphics card.

Keep in mind that manual fan control will likely result in more noise, as the fans will need to spin faster to keep your graphic card cool.

Moreover, it will also cut the life expectancy of your fan’s ball bearings shorter. So if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of longevity for the sake of performance, go ahead and disable fan control.

Bottom Line

Hopefully, this blog post has helped you to troubleshoot the issue of why your graphics card fans are not spinning.  I hope you found it informative.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them down below. I would be more than happy to help you out.
